Our third and final new vineyard designate in 2009! Planted in 1886 at 1000 feet elevation on the western flanks of the Mayacamas Mountains, Monte Rosso Vineyard is one of the most historic and majestic old-vine vineyards in California. Picked near the end of September, yields were a respectable 2.7 tons to the acre. Cold soaked for six days prior to an indigenous fermentation, the wine was pressed after 19 days on the skins to all French oak, 27% new. Unfined and unfiltered. Approximately 94% Zinfandel and 6% interplanted Grand noir.

Tasting Note: Dark garnet-ruby. Blackberry, cherry, pepper, and just a touch of mocha provide for an olfactory smorgasbord. The wine enters oh-so smoothly but tannins and acidity on the finish ensure the palate stays refreshed, eager for another sip. Normally it takes us a couple vintages to best understand a vineyard but in our first year here, we seem to have hit it out of the park. A testament to how great this vineyard is. Optimum drinking should be from release through 2016. (MRO – 3/15/11)
