Slowly but surely the 98 year-old vines at Rossi Ranch are coming back to life. A whopping [tongue firmly planted in cheek] 1.7 tons was picked on October 15th, making this the last Zinfandel for the year. Keeping to the spirit of this organically farmed vineyard, the must was not inoculated for fermentation, relying instead upon ambient yeasts. After a long but steady fermentation (19 days), the wine was pressed to French oak, 22% new. Fifteen months later it was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Note:

Medium-dark ruby-garnet. Explosive aromas of macerated red cherries, earth and orange zest emerge from the glass. Full-bodied with aromas echoed in the flavors. A note of pepper emerges in the mid-palate. The long cherry-filled finish is punctuated by firm but gentle tannins. A real standout at a tasting earlier this year of all Rossi Ranch Zins we’ve produced to date. Should age very well. Enjoy from 2012 to 2020. (MRO – 08/01/10)
