We have used Tanya’s and Lingenfelder in the past for our Sonoma County Zinfandel but Oddone and Bismark Mountain were new to us in 2010.  All the vineyards performed admirably but Bismark Mountain Vineyard was truly exceptional.  Located on the western flank of the Mayacamas Mountains at 2000’ elevation, the vineyard was well above the persistent summer fog layer and saw plenty of sunshine throughout the growing season.  In fact, the fruit was so well acclimatized to sun and warmth that after the heat of August 24th, we were hard pressed to find a single damaged berry.  Yay!  As usual, bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Sonoma County Zinfandel

Tasting Note:

Very dark ruby-purple. A fascinating nose of blackberry, cherry, and of all things, peaches! Reminds me of Kendall’s summer-time cobbler. Smooth and full-bodied on entry, flavors of stone fruits (black plums, peaches, and apricots) build through the lip-smacking finish. Either enjoy this wine upon release or give it until 2014 to allow some the youthful tannins to subside. A winner at any price but given what we’re selling it for, crazy QPR! (MRO – 01/17/12)
