1999 Russian River Valley "Two Acres" Red Wine
62% Mourvèdre
28% Petite Sirah
8% Carignane
2% Alicante Bouschet
This wine hails from two acres of old vines (c. 1910) that we have been slowly and painstakingly nursing back to health. As in 1998, miniscule yields were once again the rule here. Nevertheless, each variety was picked separately (yes, we actually were fermenting small bucket-sized amounts) and fermented indigenously. After the malolactic fermentation the following spring, the final blend was assembled. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Dark ruby in color, aromas of blood, game, iron, and clove form an exotic sniff. Full bodied on the palate with an exceptional creamy texture, the wine finishes with intriguing notes of spice, pine, and forest floor. Delicious now but we suspect it will age beautifully, continuing to drink well 10 years from vintage date. A truly unique Californian wine. (MRO - 11/17/00)
