From 4 acres of extremely old vines at the Gum Tree Ranch came 2.25 tons of perfectly ripe, powerfully flavored zinfandel. The must was cold soaked for 5 days before an indigenous fermentation began. After 20 days on the skins, it was pressed to all French oak, 40% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered after 16 months aging.
Tasting Note:
Intense aromas of eucalyptus, mint, bay leaf, and chocolate spill from the glass. Seriously dark and viscous, tipping the scales at 16.3% alcohol, the wine bursts with berry fruit on the palate. Although this wine is drinking very well right now, a recent bottle left open for a week showed no sign of oxidation. (MRO - 11/17/00)
