2002 Sonoma Valley Zinfandel
100% Sonoma Valley Zinfandel, Arrowhead Mountain Vineyard
The organically farmed Arrowhead Mountain Vineyard is planted on a steep 60% slope in rocky, volcanic soil. Budwood for the vineyard came from the nearby Cooke Vineyard. Although its exposure is southerly, the site is relatively cool due to its proximity to Carneros and the San Francisco Bay. Picked October 13th, the grapes were fully destemmed but not crushed. The must was cold-soaked for 5 days prior to the start of fermentation. After 20 days on the skins, the wine was pressed to all French oak, 25% new. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Very dark ruby in color. Captivating aromas of blackberry, loamy earth, pepper, and beef tartare. Zinfandel that thinks it's a Syrah! The wine enters full and rich, completely enveloping the palate, followed by teasing tannins on the finish. A fascinating and complex example of the variety. Enjoy this wine from late 2005 through 2010. (MRO - 11/4/03)
