2004 Russian River Valley "Carlo's Ranch" Zinfandel
99% Zinfandel
1% Mixed Blacks (Carignane, Petite Sirah)
Carlo’s Ranch was planted in 1934 by Celestino (aka Charlie) Papera. As the crow flies, this vineyard is less than a mile from Carlisle Vineyard and only a quarter mile down the road from Pietro’s Ranch. Nevertheless, our Zinfandel from Carlo’s is quite different, possessing a more feminine, elegant nature, perhaps due to the lack of intermixed black varieties. Yields in 2004 were approximately 1.3 tons to the acre. Fermented indigenously and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Medium-dark ruby-red. Beautiful, perfumed aromas of red cherries, orange zest, and fresh cream. On the palate, full-bodied but oh so well balanced with an incredible burst of red raspberry/cherry flavor. The natural acidity in this wine keeps the finish fresh and lively. Certainly enjoyable on release but best from early 2007 through 2011. An outstanding new addition to the Carlisle portfolio! (MRO – 11/1/06)
