2004 Sonoma Valley "Rossi Ranch" Zinfandel
91% Zinfandel
9% Alicante Bouschet
In 2003, we picked this vineyard in one pass and co-fermented the sizeable amount of Alicante with the Zin. However, in 2004, we took a very different approach. First, we picked the hillside Zin over the course of two days. A week later, we picked the hillside Alicante. Finally, another week later, we picked the Zin from the flatter sections of the vineyard. A lot of ground was covered as these organically farmed vines planted in 1910 yielded only one quarter ton to the acre. Each component was fermented separately (indigenously, of course, to keep to the spirit of this vineyard) with the final blend being assembled the following summer. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Dark ruby purple. Again, nearly opaque. Intoxicating, deep aromas of blackberries, dark chocolate, with a hint of black pepper and orange peel. On the palate, rich and full bodied with that unmistakable Rossi “garrigue” (pepper, lavender, and wild herbs). Pleasing tannins on the finish. A real step up from the outstanding ’03. Enjoy from early 2007 through 2011. (MRO – 11/1/06)
