2005 Russian River Valley "Two Acres" Red Wine
85% Mourvèdre
7% Petite Sirah
4% Syrah
4% Carignane
From a surviving two acres of vines planted in 1910, yields in 2005 were approximately 1.8 tons to the acre. Picked October 21st, the wine was pressed after 13 days on the skins to all French oak, 22% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. For whatever reason, the Alicante Bouschet in this vineyard produced no fruit in this vintage. However, this is the first vintage to include fruit from the Syrah replants.
Tasting Note:
Dark ruby-purple. A brooding, penetrating nose of iron, blackberry, blueberry, and blood orange. On the palate, full-bodied, but with beautiful delineation and structure. Flavors of black licorice and berry compote carry through to the impressive finish. Dee-lish! Drink mid-2008 through 2017. (MRO – 10/15/07)
