2006 Russian River Valley "Montafi Ranch" Zinfandel
93% Zinfandel
7% Mixed Black Varieties (Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir, and others)
Picked on October 23rd, nearly as late as in 2005, yields here were just over 1 ton to the acre. The fruit was fully destemmed and cold-soaked for six days before an indigenous fermentation began. On the skins for 19 days, it was gently pressed to all French oak, 30% new. The wine continued to ferment in barrel for another seven months before finishing dry at 0.28% residual sugar. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Dark ruby-garnet. Classic Montafi aromas of red and black berries intertwined with notes of bay leaf and eucalyptus. On the palate, full-bodied and well-balanced with flavors echoing the aromas. Very long on the finish. Less like the 2005 and more like the 2004. Man this is good! Drink 2008-2012. (MRO – 3/1/08)
