Syrah is a very adaptive cultivar, performing admirably in a myriad of climates and locales. But one area, with its long growing season and cool climate, that has proved particularly successful for the variety is Santa Lucia Highlands. Picked October 22nd at 23.9 Brix. Nineteen days on the skins. Forty percent whole cluster to add aromatic complexity and structure. Unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Very dark ruby-purple. Verging on opaque. Cool climate aromas of grapefruit, smoke, white pepper, and herbs. On the palate, full-bodied and smooth but with tremendous underlying structure. Notes of white pepper and violets echo on the finish. Reminds me a bit of a great St. Joseph. This will age well. Enjoy 2013 through 2020. (MRO – 3/15/11)
