2009 Sonoma Valley "Bedrock Vineyard" Mourvèdre
100% Mourvèdre
Our first pure Mourvèdre! Within the 33 acres of old vines at Bedrock Vineyard (planted 1888!) are two gorgeous blocks of Mourvèdre. We often see Mourvèdre vines amongst old-vine Zinfandel in Sonoma but rarely do we see whole blocks of it, especially over 120 years old! We consider ourselves quite fortunate to be receiving some of this exceptional fruit. Picked September 26th, the must was cold soaked for four days prior to the indigenous fermentation. All French oak but only 20% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Medium-dark to dark ruby. A mélange of cherry and blueberry fruit is complemented by notes of bittersweet cocoa powder and pleasant woodsy aromas. Full-bodied and supple on entry, velvety tannins slowly build through the persistent finish. Enjoyable now but very age worthy due to Mourvèdre’s anti-oxidative properties. Optimum drinking of this rare and special wine should be between 2015 and 2024. (MRO – 9/25/11)
