2010 Russian River Valley "Martinelli Road Vineyard" Zinfandel
100% Zinfandel
Curiously, even somewhat miraculously, Martinelli Road Vineyard seemed to escape damage from the heat in August much better than other Russian River Valley Zinfandel vineyards. But given the otherwise cool summer, acid levels remained stubbornly high. Afraid that sugar levels would get out of hand, we picked October 16th at 25.2 Brix. After a five-day cold-soak, indigenous fermentation began. Pressed after 16 days on the skins to all French oak, 22% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Medium-dark to dark ruby-garnet. Heady, perfumed scents of raspberries and red cherries with a touch of citrus rind and Christmas spice cake. On the palate, obviously no shy wall flower with explosive flavors of raspberry and mulberry. Despite its size, brisk acidity keeps this wine firmly on the rails. A favorite at ZAP’s Grand Tasting in January 2012, even among those preferring lighter, more elegant wines. Drink from mid-2013 through 2018. (MRO – 07/18/12)
