2011 Sonoma Valley "Compagni Portis" White Wine
100% Field blend of Gewurztraminer, Trousseau gris, Riesling, and other mixed whites
First, the bad news. The Compagni Portis vineyard was in full bloom when late spring rain arrived. As a result, many of the flowers did not pollinate and we have barely half of what we had in 2010. But now the good news… This wine rocks! Seriously, as much as we liked the 2010, we feel this wine is even better. Whole-cluster pressed. Fermented in all stainless to preserve aromatics as fully as possible. No malolactic fermentation.
Tasting Note:
Pale white-gold. Head-turning, perfumed aromas of lychee, pear, and damask rose. Boy is this ever fun to smell! Medium bodied. Flavors of green apple, pear, lime, and tangerine caress the palate through the highly energetic finish. Optimum enjoyment of this very unique, old-vine white wine should be from release through 2015. (MRO – 01/17/13)
