2012 Russian River Valley "Limerick Lane Vineyard" Zinfandel
98% Zinfandel
2% Mixed Black Varieties (Petite Sirah, Peloursin, Trousseau noir)
An exciting new vineyard designate! Limerick Lane used to be one of my favorite producers of Zinfandel back in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. In fact, I was so enamored by their wines that in 1993 I knocked on the door of the owner’s house and asked if I could purchase a half-ton for homemade wine. He agreed and told me to show up a week later with my bins to haul away the crushed fruit. But alas, when I showed up as directed, the whole vineyard had already been picked. The owner claimed he had “forgotten” about our arrangement. I was heartbroken. Fast forward to 2009 when Limerick Lane was purchased by brothers Jake and Scot Bilbro. I had the good fortune of becoming friends with the brothers in 2012. After I told them my story of almost making a Limerick Lane Zinfandel, they insisted on offering me two tons from their oldest block planted in 1910. I was floored! It may have taken 19 years but we finally get to make Zinfandel from this very special vineyard!
Tasting Note:
Medium-dark to dark ruby-garnet. Hi-toned, mouthwatering aromas of cherry, pomegranate, and violets, possess uncommon depth and concentration. The wine enters the mouth with an explosion of licorice-tinged red cherry fruit. Texturally, this wine is all about balance and elegance. In fact, it’s downright sensuous! A stunning new wine that we are thrilled to have in our portfolio. Thank you Jake and Scot! Drink from release to 2020. (MRO – 07/18/14)
