2013 Napa Valley "Hayne Vineyard" Zinfandel
99% Zinfandel
1% Interplanted Petite Sirah, Trousseau, and Peloursin
Perhaps it was the drought. Or maybe the 110-year-old vines were simply feeling their age. Whatever the reason, the berries and clusters at Hayne Vineyard in 2013 were the smallest I’ve witnessed here. In fact, the clusters looked more like Pinot noir than Zinfandel! Generally, with small berries and small clusters comes great concentration. But since this was a high tannin year, we were concerned about over-extraction. Hence, we reduced the duration of our pump-overs and made sure our punch-downs were as gentle as possible. The approach worked and the result is pure, sexy velvet! Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Medium-dark ruby-garnet. Aromas of kirsch liquer, raspberry, and a pleasing creamy earthiness that speaks of Napa Valley. Full-bodied with a wonderful opulence. Flavors of cherry, beetroot, and Satsuma plum dance across the palate through the long finish. Not a hard edge to be found on this wine but don’t take that to mean it lacks structure. Great wines can have structure without hard, angular edges. Enjoy this majestic Napa Zin from release through 2021. (MRO – 08/18/15)
