2013 Sonoma Valley "Rossi Ranch" Zinfandel
93% Zinfandel
7% Petite Sirah
Oh what a difference a year makes! After the 2012 vintage, Phil Coturri, master of organic grape growing, was hired to farm Rossi Ranch. What he achieved in his first year was nothing short of miraculous. What I like about Phil is that he loves great wine and wants to grow grapes that make the kind of wines he likes to drink. Think Chave, Clos des Papes, Gigondas from St. Cosme, and Allemand to name a few of his favorite producers. Makes for a very easy winery-grower relationship! Picked on October 7th, the must was cold soaked for 6 days prior to the start of an indigenous fermentation. Pressed to mostly neutral French oak after 18 days on the skins, the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered. These vines were planted 104 years ago, the year Val Rossi was born. I think Val would be proud of what Phil and the new owners have achieved.
Tasting Note:
Medium-dark to dark ruby-purple. Powerful aromas of boysenberry, black cherry, and peppery spice. The Rossi garrigue is back! On the palate, dark berry fruit, spice, and licorice are framed by the velvety tannins so typical of this organically farmed site. Optimum enjoyment for this special Zinfandel should be between 2016 and 2022. (MRO – 01/21/15)
