2015 Russian River Valley "Papera Ranch" Zinfandel
96% Zinfandel
4% Carignane
Notwithstanding the freak 2010 vintage, this vineyard planted in 1934 has been on quite a run over the last decade. In fact, in the history of the Wine Spectator magazine, of the three highest scoring wines labeled as Zinfandel, two have been from Papera Ranch, a testament to just how special this vineyard is. Picked earlier than ever on September 8th, the fruit was divided into three tanks. One was fermented with a local, indigenous yeast while the other two were fermented with yeast strains isolated in the Rhône. On the skins for 18 days, the wine was pressed to all French oak, 23% new and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Very dark ruby-garnet, almost opaque. Head-turning aromas of framboise and kirsch are complemented by notes of fresh tobacco leaf, spun sugar, and spearmint leaves. What a sniff! On the palate, full-bodied but my-oh-my, so seamless, so well-balanced. Flavors of red currant, macerated cherries, and a hint of pleasing herbaceousness build through the long, smooth finish. Truly one of our top Papera Zinfandels to date. Enjoy from release through 2024. (MRO – 07/18/17)
