2016 Russian River Valley "Mancini Ranch" Zinfandel
85% Zinfandel
15% Mixed Black Varieties (Carignane, Abouriou, Valdiguié, Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir, Petite Sirah)
We are absolutely tickled pink to continue working with this historic vineyard planted in 1922. With its treasure trove of mixed black (and white!) varieties interplanted amongst the Zinfandel, this vineyard is a true gem that harkens back to another era of California viticulture. Owner Max Reichwage and vineyard manager extraordinaire Chris Bowland continue to make huge improvements here, both in soil and vine health, that are already kickin’ up the quality level. Exciting! Picked September 16th, the must was cold soaked for 5 days before inoculation with one of our favorite local yeasts. Pressed after 15 days on the skin to all French oak (only 21% new), the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Medium-dark ruby-red. Very appealing aromas of red currant and black cherry are punctuated by a fascinating note of gingerbread. Christmas in a glass! On the palate, quite fresh and invigorating with plenty of red fruit and spice buttressed by laser-like acidity. Maybe it’s the Italian-steeped history of the vineyard but the wine brings to mind many of the delicious wines we tasted in Tuscany last summer. Enjoy from 2020 through 2029. (MRO – 01/18/18)
