2017 Sonoma Valley "Rossi Ranch" Zinfandel
94% Zinfandel
6% Petite Sirah, Peloursin, Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir, and Tannat
Composed of two lots in this vintage, the first lot was picked on September 9th from a very steep, north-facing area called Schumacher Hill. Why the name Schumacher Hill? We have no idea! It was what the late Val Rossi always called it so we continue with the name today. The second lot, the old-vines planted the year Val was born, 1910, was picked nearly a month later on October 2nd. Both portions were given long cold-soaks, fermented indigenously, and pressed to all French Oak, approximately 20% new. Lightly fined with egg whites but bottled unfiltered. Like the vineyard we use for The Integral, the fires that broke out on October 9th burned completely around this ranch but amazingly, left this historic property unscathed.
Tasting Note:
Medium to medium-dark ruby-garnet. With swirling, high-toned, lifted aromas of red cherry, allsorts, tobacco, and, of course, the ever-present Rossi garrigue. Medium-full bodied, the wine enters quite smoothly, coating the palate with a velvet-like texture and displaying flavors of red licorice, cherry, and spice. Fine-grained but ample harmonious tannins bode well for further development. Enjoy this elegant yet power-packed Zinfandel from 2021 through 2028. (MRO - 11/01/19)
