2018 Bennett Valley "Radiant Ridge Vineyard" Syrah
100% Syrah
A new vineyard designate? Yep, but this is not the first time we’ve worked with this vineyard. In the previous three vintages, we picked the Syrah and Mourvèdre from Radiant Ridge Vineyard on the same day and cofermented them to create The Integral. In 2018, however, we just didn’t feel the varieties were within the same window of ripeness. Hence, the Syrah was picked first with the Mourvèdre coming in over a week later. The plan was to blend the varieties together after malolactic fermentation but the individual wines were so delicious and exciting on their own, we just couldn’t do it. For the Syrah, 20% whole cluster. Twenty days on the skins. Twenty percent new French oak. Bottled unfiltered but lightly fined with two egg whites per barrel to polish the palate. If you’re a lover of Northern Rhônes, you’ll find a lot to like in this cool-ish climate Syrah. (P.S. – The Mourvèdre will be released next year.)
Tasting Note:
Very dark magenta ruby. A heavenly nose of all kinds of yummy goodness – licorice allsorts, violet pastilles, a bit of olive tapenade, smoked game. This is classic Syrah! The party continues on the palate with black raspberry, savory herbs, and a touch of mocha and black pepper. Fabulous texture (a reoccurring theme amongst these 2018s) in this refined, mid-weight Syrah. Age-worthy but enjoyable now, the bottle opened for this tasting note disappeared embarrassingly quickly. Drink 2022 through 2032. (MRO - 07/10/20)
