2018 Sonoma Valley "Montecillo Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon
100% Cabernet Sauvignon
What’s this? Another Cabernet Sauvignon from Carlisle?!!??! Here’s the story: When we made the 2017 Montecillo Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon to celebrate our winery’s 20th anniversary, we truly thought it would be a one-off. But then I started thinking (always a dangerous thing)... Carlisle is really about old vines, right? This Cabernet vineyard at 1725’ elevation in the Mayacamas Mountains is old-vine. It’s dry farmed and it’s on St. George rootstock, much like many of our other vineyards. It totally fits our ethos so why not make it a permanent addition to the portfolio? Fortunately, the owner, Kaarin Lee, felt the same way and through her kindness and generosity, offered to continue selling us this very much in-demand fruit. 2018 was a short crop but we should have about 50% more in 2019 (although sadly none in 2020). Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Medium to medium-dark ruby garnet. With a bit of swirling and coaxing, aromas of cherry, tobacco leaf, and a slight hint of Cabernet weediness begin to emerge. On the palate, medium bodied with flavors of red currant and a touch of cedar. Finishes long with pleasing astringency and tannin. I want to be perfectly clear though. This is not modern-day Cabernet Sauvignon. This is old-school, mountain-grown Cabernet, a wine that is tightly coiled, elegant, and understated, something that demands patience to reveal its best. I would hold it at least 10 years, longer if you can, and enjoy from 2030 (with a decant) through 2050. (MRO - 01/05/21)
