2018 Sonoma Valley "Pagani Ranch" Zinfandel
94% Zinfandel
6% Mixed Black Varieties (Petite Sirah, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet)
Our last Zinfandel pick of the year, coming in on October 20th, the 123-year-old vines at Pagani really outdid themselves in this vintage. Although we also picked our section of Alicante Bouschet on the same day, we fermented the two lots separately, deciding to do blending trials after malolactic fermentation the following spring. A little Alicante Bouschet can go a long way! Sure enough, through our trials, our preference was a blend of only 2% Alicante. At higher amounts, we felt the wine lost its “zinny-ness”, something we really wanted to retain. Nineteen days on the skins. Twenty-three percent new French oak. Unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Very dark ruby-garnet. Nearly opaque. An incredible nose of blackberry, beet root, freshly tilled dark earth, and brown spices. A slight suggestion of peach as well. This is Pagani at its feral best! As the wine enters the mouth, it quickly envelops the palate with a silken texture and medium-full body. Flavors of blackberry and peach cobbler build through the long, satisfying finish. Flamboyant and expressive but impeccably balanced and polished. Our finest Pagani to date? I certainly think so. Enjoy this wonderful old-vine Sonoma Valley Zin from release through 2027.
