2019 Sonoma Valley “Compagni Portis” White Wine
100% Field blend of Gewurztraminer, Trousseau gris, Riesling, and other mixed whites
Unfortunately, just as the old-vine Gewürztraminer at Compagni Portis was in full bloom, rain fell. A lot. Pollination was disrupted and very little fruit set. I wish I could say we will have more in 2020 but since spring weather greatly influences the fruitfulness of vines in the next growing season, and rainfall in May was 300% of normal, we do not. Fermented and aged in all stainless steel. No malolactic fermentation. Fined with bentonite clay and filtered at bottling for stability.
Tasting Note:
Pale straw-yellow. Captivating aromas of lychee, red apple, and rose petal. As intoxicatingly fragrant as ever! Medium-bodied, flavors of lychee, apple, and musk melon make for a very happy palate. Although a touch lighter in body than previous years, in no way less expressive. As an old-vine, California white, quite singular and unique. Enjoy from release through 2026. (MRO - 01/05/21)
