2019 Sonoma Valley "Pagani Ranch" Zinfandel
91% Zinfandel
9% Alicante Bouschet/Grand Noir
The picturesque 124-year-old Zinfandel vines of Pagani Ranch were picked on September 30th. Two weeks later, on October 14th, we picked the “young vine” Alicante Bouschet and Grand Noir, planted in 1920. Once malolactic fermentation completed the following spring, based on numerous trials, we blended a bit of the Alicante/Grand Noir into the Zinfandel (accounting for 9%) to create the final wine. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Translucent medium ruby garnet. Initially a bit reserved but with coaxing, aromas of cherry Jolly Ranchers, blood orange, and red licorice whips emerge. A slight hint of menthol as well. Interestingly, like the 2017, this smells more like Russian River Valley than Sonoma Valley. The wine glides across the palate, displaying flavors of cherry, red currant, and pomegranate. Finishes long and gently tannic. A very suave, polished, and impeccably balanced Pagani that can be enjoyed any time over the next 8 years. (MRO - 07/18/21)
