2019 Sonoma Valley "Bedrock Vineyard" Zinfandel
98% Zinfandel (includes a couple percent mixed black varieties)
2% Alicante Bouschet
In this vintage, we decided to take our Bedrock fruit in two picks. First came block 31 on September 10th. A week later, we took block 36. Each pick was fermented separately using a variety of natural yeast strains and pressed to all French oak after an average of 14 days on the skins. The following spring, post malolactic fermentation, we assembled the final blend, aging it in a bit more new oak than usual, 33% to be exact. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Medium to medium-dark ruby-garnet. Cherries and cream are a heavenly dream! Seriously, this smells so good that it’s hard to pull the nose away. Yes, there is bright red cherry fruit. And yes, there is a compelling creamy element. But there is also bramble, underbrush, licorice, a touch of orange rind, and so much more. A veritable smorgasbord of aromas! Medium to medium-full bodied, the wine finishes with youthful tannin so common to this site. If you plan on drinking it soon, a good 8-hour decant is recommended. Otherwise, let it rest and enjoy from 2024 through 2032. Either way, a knockout Zin from one of Sonoma Valley’s most storied vineyards. (MRO - 07/18/22)
