2020 Sonoma Valley "Compagni Portis" White Wine
100% Field blend of Gewurztraminer, Trousseau gris, and Riesling
As usual, harvest in 2020 kicked off with Compagni Portis. Every year we hope these nearly 70-year-old vines will produce more fruit but alas, a very meager 1.7 tons were picked on August 21st. (Sadly, yields in 2021 were even less.) Fully destemmed, we soaked the juice on the skins for several hours, not only to improve press yields but also to punch up the aromatics. After several weeks, fermentation was arrested with 6 g/L of residual sugar. This is the one wine we produce where we find a barely perceptible amount of sugar helps create a more harmonious and balanced wine. Aged in all stainless steel. No malolactic fermentation so filtered for bottle stability but not fined.
Tasting Note:
Medium-light straw-yellow. As consistent as ever, lychee, rose, pear, and red apple in the nose. On the palate, medium-light to medium bodied with intense flavors of lychee and apple. Another winner from this old-vine field blend of Gewurztraminer, Trousseau gris, and Riesling. Enjoy from release though 2028. (MRO - 01/17/22)
