2021 Sonoma Valley "Old Hill Ranch" Red Wine
100% Field blend of mostly Zinfandel along with 20 or more other varieties
We still can’t believe our good fortune to be receiving fruit from this lovingly and organically farmed historic vineyard of over 30 varieties planted in the late 1800s. Again, although Zinfandel dominates, we have chosen to call it “red wine” since we’re unsure if Zinfandel constitutes at least 75% of the blend, the minimum for varietal labeling. Picked relatively early on September 9th, yields were down a bit from the previous year due to drought. Fully destemmed and cold soaked for 5 days before fermentation began on its own. Twenty-one days on the skins. All French oak, 20% new. Unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
Medium dark to dark ruby-garnet/purple. Deep, redolent aromas of cherry compote, black licorice, and dusty cocoa powder. Texturally, stunning, with a gorgeous broad and spreading palate. Dark berry fruits mingle with authoritative but well-integrated tannins. A seamless wine combining power with finesse. As good as the ’20 is, this is a considerable step up and should improve with additional bottle age. Drink 2026 through 2036. (MRO - 07/15/23)
