2022 Sonoma Mountain "Steiner Vineyard" Grüner Veltliner
100% Grüner Veltliner
The older, more quickly maturing terraced block was picked on August 30th while the slightly younger knoll block was picked on September 12th. Yields were well below 3 tons per acre, likely due to the shatter-inducing weather we had in May and early June. Blending trials were performed the following spring and we found our favorite wine to be the full combination of both lots. However, even then there was not enough to fully fill our 1200 L oval upright. Hence, aged in all stainless steel. No malolactic fermentation to preserve acidity. Filtered but not fined.
Tasting Note:
Medium light straw-gold in color. Salivating aromas of white grapefruit, Meyer lemon, and white pepper. As these vines age, the fruit seems to be taking on more of an “Austrian” profile. Medium to medium-full body, flavors of yellow citrus (again, grapefruit and lemon) are delivered with the most silken texture. It’s difficult to stop sipping this wine and a shame we have so little. Enjoy from release through 2032. (MRO - 01/18/24)
