2022 Sonoma Valley "Compagni Portis" White Wine
100% Field blend of Gewurztraminer, Trousseau gris, Riesling, and other mixed whites
Perhaps no vineyard in 2022 took it on the chin yield-wise more than Compagni Portis. From an acre and a half we harvested a paltry 1.08 tons of fruit on August 19th at 22.1 Brix. (Compare that to a pick date of September 18th in 2023!). Unlike our other whites, the fruit was fully destemmed and allowed to macerate for 3 hours in bins before being gently pressed to tank for inoculation with an Alsatian isolate of yeast. Aged in all stainless steel. No malolactic fermentation. Not fined but filtered.
Tasting Note:
Light green-gold in appearance. A very fragrant nose of Musk melon and Pink Pearl apple with ethereal background notes of Lychee and antique rose. On the palate, medium bodied with flavors of tart apples, pears, and lime. Much drier than the 2021 with no perceptible sweetness. Refreshing and delicious, this wine can be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif or with a wide variety of foods such as goat cheeses, shellfish (even oysters!), roast chicken, and my favorite, tacos al pastor. Enjoy from release through 2030. (MRO - 01/18/24)
